If you run a company or are in a position of leadership, people turn to you for help and direction in navigating difficult times. Often is the case that you yourself are without such a figure to look to. There isn’t a manual, a how to guide, not much is black and white just a whole lot of grey area.
Somehow you’ve got to get over your personal emotions and frustrations and lead your team into the next stage of battle.
More often than not, there isn’t necessarily a ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ way to do things, it is about executing some good judgement, and here are my 3 top tips to help you in leading a team during a time of uncertainty:
- SHOW THAT YOU’RE HUMAN:
A time of crisis provides you with an opportunity to display humility to the people around you. It is ok to admit that you haven’t got all the answers yourself, it’s ok to admit that you’re frustrated or find things difficult. Don’t be afraid to show vulnerability, as when there is a global crisis going on, no one has all the answers. As a leader you are of course expected to balance these admissions with some bold decision making, and getting that balance right depends on your personal style. When you let your guard down a bit and show your human side, you will hopefully invite some meaningful responses and reactions from the people you work with too
2. COMMUNICATION
In a nutshell my simple advice is to, if in doubt, increase communication to your team during difficult times. Of course each scenario is entirely unique and giving generalised advice in a blog post is difficult. Know that in general, even if it’s not always good news, people want to hear from you. In good times and in rough times, your employees want to hear from you and as their leader try to be as visible and transparent as you can. Your communication should be a mix of addressing the masses style round ups and updates, as well as personalised check ins and empathetic messages to open up meaningful 1-2-1 conversations.
3. BE YOU
Don’t lose sight of yourself and your values. There is so much uncertainty in the world around you right now, but don’t let that change you. Leadership can be lonely and you are going to need to dig deep at times. What do you stand for? What values are truly important to you? What kind of leader do you want to be? What do you want to be known for? Find your clarity on the answers to these important questions, and let that guide you through tough times. Not everyone is going to agree with every decision you make, but what matters is if you can stand by your own decisions and act with integrity and remain true to yourself.
